House of Commons Celebration

Maria and Rukhsana attended an event at the House of Commons in November celebrating 30 years of the Department of Health's Opportunities for Volunteers programme. Maria gave a presentation about our work with volunteers, as OfV currently funds our On the Doorstep project (April 2009-March 2012). We'd like to take this opportunity to thank the Department of Health and Age UK for their support in delivering this project.

The Garden is Growing

Work began this year on fundraising to improve the garden behind Batley Old People's Centre. Quite a lot has already been achieved, and this month (November 2010) a new fence went up to protect the area. This means we can start planning and planting! Ultimately we are working towards a lovely, fully accessible community garden that can be utilised and enjoyed by centre users. The fence has been funded by Kirklees Environment Grants Scheme.

Census 2011

From March 27th 2011 everyone in the UK should receive their census form and will be able to return it via ordinary post, or complete it online.

Government and local authorities depend on this information to help make sure you get the services you need in your community. And that means asking questions of a lot of people. Not completing your form can actually affect budgets for services on offer.

For online information follow this link http://2011.census.gov.uk

Sweet Charity

A big thank you to Margaret and all the volunteers who helped make our MacMillan Coffee Morning a great success in September. This took place at Batley Old People’s Centre and raised £368 for the charity, who encourage venues to host ‘the world’s biggest coffee morning’ every September. Well done everyone concerned! (Sept 2009)

And another thank you to two more of our fab volunteers – Katie and Caroline – who helped raise £82.61 in collections for Age UK. 90% of this money will be returned to the Resource Centre to be used directly for our work with older people. (Sept 2009)
