VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

On the Doorstep is project which encourages people to share their skills and time through volunteering, and focuses this valuable support through work mainly with older people.

Our volunteers deliver activities and support that encourage people aged 50+ to participate in active leisure, health and social groups.  Age is only a number, after all!

We currently run lunch clubs, coffee mornings, and a vibrant Monday Club. Our befriending service matches volunteers with older people who may feel isolated or unable to get out and about, and need a bit of regular company.

We are currently seeking CAR COMPANIONS - volunteer drivers who can assist older clients who need to get to appointments, such as hospital visits. Training is given and expenses reimbursed.

We welcome people to contact us – what activities, groups or support would you like to see on your doorstep? Or perhaps you'd like to find our more about volunteering?

Call the Volunteer Coordinator on 01924 326331 or email batleyresourcecentre@tiscali.co.uk

On the Doorstep is supported by the Department of Health's Opportunities for Volunteers programme, administered by Age UK

Befriending Service

This service aims to provide socially isolated people with regular visits from a volunteer with whom they can share a cup of tea and enjoy a chat. Where possible befriending volunteers will accompany a person out and about, giving them the confidence to join social groups. Anyone can refer a client for this service. Please call us at Batley Resource Centre to find out more.

Car Companions

What are Car Companions?

Car Companions are volunteers who offer their time to accompany clients to appointments, such as hospital visits, or even social groups. They may drive a client in their own car or go with them in a taxi. They offer company and friendship, not just a lift!

Who is eligible for this service?

• People who have difficulty getting out and about
• People who struggle to use public transport
• People who need a friend for company and confidence when visiting the doctor or hospital

How does it work?

Anyone wishing to use the service must be registered and can call Batley Resource Centre to request a Car Companion when required (giving at least 3 days notice). The booking is logged and we try to find an available volunteer.

The client will be charged per mile and may also have to pay car park charges where applicable. If they have a blue badge, we ask them to take it. If travelling by taxi, they pay the fare directly. The client does not pay the volunteer – they complete a form after each trip to register the mileage, and are sent an invoice at the end of the month. Volunteers submit a claim form to be reimbursed for expenses.
